The New Yorker

The Therapy Issue

This special digital issue of The New Yorker examines the talking cure and other pursuits of feeling better. I was inspired by surrealist motifs: the head as a psychological stage, gestural lines of a therapists’ notes, and gradients expressing emotional spectrum. The result is both cerebral and emotive, transforming headspace into a visual playground.

I wanted the art for the issue to be surreal and dreamlike.

The spots peppered through the issue depict therapy buzzwords like codependent, self-care, and trauma-dump.

Anthony Gerace created a dynamic collage for our critics’ roundtable on the changing role of the therapist on television.
