The New Yorker Interviews

The New Yorker’s first digital issue, featured interviews with leading figures in politics, literature, and art, Without a unifying theme to guide the visual direction, I latched onto the idea of an interview as a portrait made from words, commissioning an abstract opening image of woven questions to represent the dynamic living nature of an interview.

I commissioned the artist Jules Julien, whose brightly hued portraits accompanied several of the interviews, providing the issue with a distinct visual voice.

I designed modular components for the page allowing dynamic updates and flexiblity for promotion throughout the week.

I commissioned Kiel Mutschelknaus to animate four unique pull quotes and the opening art, which provided an additional entry point for the articles. It was a delight taking Irvin—The New Yorker’s quintessential typeface, which is elegant, idiosyncratic, and a little staid—and making it dance.

I provided art direction and design for the issue across platforms like Instagram and TikTok.
